Uno de los elementos de seguridad más importantes en toda embarcación es el fondeo. Además, si se quiere hacer cruceros con un fondeo seguro, y sin preocupaciones en casi cualquier circunstancia, es necesario tener una buena ancla.

One of the most important safety devices in any boat is anchoring. Also, if you want to make cruises with a safe anchorage, and without worries in almost any circumstance, it is necessary to have a good anchor.

El ancla que he tenido durante mucho tiempo era de tipo de arado, una CQR, son anclas muy buenas pero la mía tenía uno de los lados un poco doblado y la cadena estaba un poco vieja, aunque la mayor parte de ella estaba en un estado aceptable otra parte no. Por eso antes de salir de crucero el pasado verano decidieron cambiar ambas.

The anchor that I have had for a long time was a plow type, a CQR, they are very good anchors but mine had one of the sides a little bent and the chain was a bit old, although most of it was in a state acceptable other part no. That's why before leaving for a cruise last summer they decided to change both.

Rocna y la Spade, ambas son excelentes para el fondeo, pero como tengo un púlpito en proa y el ancla Rocna tiene un arco puede que no encajase bien. Por eso se decidieron por una Spade y cincuenta metros de cadena de hierro galvanizado de 10mm ¡nuevos y flamantes!

Among the different options of anchors of the market Antonio I consider two, the Rocna and the Spade, both are excellent for the anchoring, but as I have a pulpit in the bow and the Rocna anchor has a arc that it wouldn't fit well. That's why they decided on a Spade... and fifty meters of 10mm galvanized iron chain brand new!

Lo primero que hicieron fue cambiar mi orientación, normalmente estoy de popa al muelle y, lógicamente, es mejor estar proa a él para realizar esta operación.

The first thing they did was to change my orientation, I am usually aft to the dock and, logically, it is better to be opposite to it to carry out this operation.

Luego extendieron la cadena por el pantalán, al verla ahí, tan reluciente, me sentí encantado, ya ni recordaba la última vez que tuve una cadena nueva. Una vez extendida Antonio y Raquel se pusieron a marcar la cadena con unas pequeñas piezas de plástico de distintos colores, a 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 y 40 metros. Estas piezas facilitan información de cuanta cadena se ha filado.

Then they extended the chain by the jetty, seeing it there, so gleaming, I felt enchanted, I can't even remember the last time I had a new chain. Once extended Antonio and Raquel began to mark the chain with small pieces of plastic of different colors, at 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40 meters (50, 66, 82, 100, 115 & 131 feet). These pieces provide information on how much chain has been cast.

Tras soltar el grillete de mi vieja CQR la dejaron sobre el muelle y procedieron a sacar toda mi cadena dejándola en un carrito de la compra. Una vez fuera, Antonio inspeccionó el pozo del ancla, la pintura estaba algo deteriorada, pero el estado de la fibra y la madera no era bueno, así que decidieron posponer los trabajos de pintura para otra ocasión. Así que metieron mi lujosa cadena nueva en el pozo.

After releasing the shackle of my old CQR they left it on the dock and proceeded to take out my whole chain leaving it in a shopping cart. Once outside, Antonio inspected the store of chain, the paint was damaged, but the condition of the fiber and wood was good, so they decided to postpone the painting for another time. So, they put my luxurious new chain in the storage.

¡Había llegado la hora de montar mi nueva ancla! Comenzaron desembalándola con mucho cuidado, Antonio leyó cuidadosamente las instrucciones de montaje, aunque no eran demasiado largas ni demasiado complicadas, es bastante cuidadoso y suele hacerlo. En unos 30 minutos habían montado el ancla y la subieron a bordo, colocándola en la roldana. Por último, utilizaron un grillete giratorio para unir el ancla a la cadena, en los tornillos aplicaron un pegamento especial para asegurar su fijación.

The time had come to assemble my new anchor! They began unpacking it with great care, Antonio read carefully the assembly instructions, although they were not too long or too complicated, he is quite careful and usually does it. In about 30 minutes they had mounted the anchor and put it on board, placing it on the sheave. Finally, they used a rotating shackle to join the anchor to the chain, in the screws they applied a special glue to ensure its fixation.

Como el ancla no es exactamente igual que la vieja CQR no coincide el agujero del perno de sujeción a la roldana, pero bastará con hacerle un agujero la caña del ancla en el lugar preciso.

Since the anchor is not exactly the same as the old CQR, the hole in the clamping bolt does not match, but it will suffice to drill a hole in the anchor shank in the right place.

Ahora dispongo de un sistema de fondeo nuevo y eficaz, me sentiré muy seguro cada vez que echemos el ancla en alguna cala, puerto o fondeadero. Podré dormir tranquilo mecido por un sabe oleaje y refrescado por una brisa sin miedo a acabar en la playa o en alta mar.

Now I have a new and effective anchoring system, I will feel very safe every time we drop anchor in a cove, port or anchorage. I will be able to sleep peacefully rocked by a soft wave and refreshed by a breeze without fear of ending up on the beach or at sea.

Las últimas semanas la actividad ha sido frenética, Raquel y Antonio se han dedicado a lijar sin parar y luego a barnizar, pero eso será objeto de otra entrada.

También colocaron un Nacimiento, yo nunca había visto uno, según parece es una tradición muy arraigada en España. El Nacimiento es una representación del nacimiento de Jesús en el establo de Belén, las figuras clásicas se componen del la Virgen María, San José, el Niño Dios, un buey y una mula, pero además se suelen poner muchas más figuras, de labriegos, de pastores, ovejas, pescadores, etc…

They also placed a “Nacimiento”, I had never seen one, it seems to be a tradition deeply rooted in Spain. The “Nacimiento” is a representation of the birth of Jesus in the stable of Bethlehem, the classical figures are composed by Mother Mary, St. Joseph, the Child Jesus, an ox and a mule, but also often put many more figures, peasants, shepherds, sheep, fishermen, etc ...

Las hay de distintos tamaños, algunas incluso de tamaño natural. La decoración también varía mucho, desde el simple barro pintado a lujosas telas. Aunque por un problema de espacio, yo sólo cuento con las figuras esenciales y además en un tamaño muy reducido (7 cm).

Como os he contado esta es una tradición muy arraigada en España, pero no es de origen español en realidad proviene de Nápoles. Felipe V (rey de España) abdicó el 10 de enero de 1724 en favor de su primer hijo vivo, Luis y cedió la corona de Nápoles y las dos Sicilias (Cerdeña y Sicilia) a su tercer hijo, Carlos.

As I told you, this is a deeply rooted tradition in Spain, but it is not of Spanish origin it really comes from Naples. Philip V (King of Spain) abdicated on January 10, 1724 in favor of his first living son, Luis and yielded the crown of Naples and the two Sicilies (Sardinia and Sicily) to his third son, Carlos.

De hecho, los Nacimientos napolitanos son famosos en el mundo entero.

Luis died on August 31 of that same year of smallpox, so the second son Fernando VI inherited the crown, who also died in August of 1759. Otra tradición muy navideña es el árbol de Navidad, pero ¿cómo tener un árbol en un barco tan pequeño? Raque y Antonio, con su imaginación resolvieron este problema… como colofón colocaron unas luces en mi exterior colgadas de la driza del tangón, ¡en forma de árbol de Navidad!

Después de llegar a Burriana me pasé tres interminables semanas en su varadero.

Los primeros días como llovía a cántaros no pudieron quitarme el plástico que me envolvía ni trabajar en mi.

La verdad es que había mucho trabajo que hacer después de dos años en tierra y de un viaje tan largo.

After arriving in Burriana, I spent three interminable weeks in its dry dock.

The first days, as it was pouring rain, they could not removed the plastic that was wrapped around me and work on me.

Certainly, there was a lot of work to be done after two years on land and on such a long journey.

Debido al traqueteo del remolque apareció una grieta entre el lastre y mi orza, esto nos obligó a revisar minuciosamente los pernos por si acaso.

Due to the rattle of the trailer, a crack appeared between the ballast and my luff, which forced us to carefully check the bolts just in case.

Además había que aparejar mi palo, cambiar el prensaestopa, los grifos de fondo y por supuesto pintar mi carena.

I also had to rig my mast, change the gland, the bottom taps and of course paint my careen.

Empezamos por mi mástil, antes de montarlo de nuevo le pusieron cables nuevos para las las luces, además de unas nuevas luces led de navegación y fondeo en el tope del mástil, hasta ahora las luces de navegación que tenía eran las que llevo a la altura del púlpito y el balcón de popa, que por cierto cambiamos también por leds, ¡Ahora tengo dos juegos de luces de navegación!

We started with my mast, before assembling it again they put new cables for the lights, as well as new led navigation lights and mooring light at the top of the mast, until now the navigation lights that I had were the ones that I take to the height from the bow pulpit and aft, which by the way we change also by leds, now I have two sets navigation light!

Otra cosa que también ha cambiado en la perilla es que tengo una veleta, cuando tengo las luces de navegación encendidas se ve muy bien por la noche... me gusta esa veleta...

Pero no acaba ahí la cosa, mi antena de radio y su cable son totalmente nuevos, la antigua estaba bastante deteriorada.

But the thing does not end there, my radio antenna and its cable are totally new, the old one was quite deteriorated.

Y por último otro elemento nuevo, un anemómetro y una pequeña veleta para el instrumento de viento que pronto me instalarán... esto es todo una revolución, nunca había tenido instrumentación de viento, y estoy deseando que me la instalen. Creo que esta es de las pocas concesiones que Antonio va a hacer a la tecnología moderna, y ya sé que no es gran cosa, pero para un barco como yo, de cincuenta años esto supone toda una novedad y me hace mucha ilusión.

And finally another new element, an anemometer and a small wind vane for the wind instrument that will soon install me ... this is all a revolution, I had never had wind instrumentation, and I'm looking forward to being installed. I think this is one of the few concessions that Antonio is going to make to modern technology, and I know it's not a big deal, but for a boat like me, fifty years old this is a novelty and I'm very excited about it.

El primer fin de semana que pasé en el varadero vinieron a verme Raquel y Antonio. Por fin vi quienes eran mis nuevos dueños, aunque ya lo sospechaba, era esa simpática pareja de españoles a los que había conocido unos meses antes.

The first weekend I spent at the dry dock came to see me Raquel and Antonio. At last I saw who my new owners were, although I already suspected it, it was that nice couple of Spaniards I had met a few months before.

No durmieron conmigo, habían tomado una habitación de hotel, pero pasaron todo el fin de semana poniendo algo de orden en mi interior y tirando un montón de trastos viejos, es increíble la cantidad de cosas inútiles, que  aparentemente sirven para algo, que se pueden acumular en los barcos. También empezaron con la limpieza.

They did not sleep with me, they had taken a hotel room, but they spent the whole weekend putting some order in my interior and throwing away a lot of old junk, it is amazing the amount of useless things, that apparently serve for something, that can be accumulate on ships. They also started with cleaning.

Después de colocar el palo le llegó el turno al motor, los trabajadores de Spornautic lo sacaron con mucho cuidado y se lo llevaron a su taller para pintar el cárter y sellar posibles fugas. También le dieron una buena mano de pintura.

Aprovechando que no estaba el motor le dieron una buena limpieza a la sentina y un par de manos de pintura, y cambiaron el grifo de fondo de la toma de agua de refrigeración y los silentblock. También cambiaron los discos del prensaestopa.

Taking advantage of the fact that the engine was not there, they gave a good cleaning to the bilge and a couple of hands of paint, and they changed the bottom tap of the cooling water intake and the silentblock. They also changed the stuffing box discs.

También se cambió el grifo de fondo de toma de agua salada del fregadero y el WC, y la salida de aguas negras. ¡En total todos mis grifos de fondo y pasacascos nuevos!

The bottom tap for the salt water intake of the sink and the WC, and the sewage outlet were also changed. In total all my bottom taps and new thru-hulls!

Entonces una nueva sorpresa... iban a colocarme una nueva corredera y una sonda, pero debido a la forma de mi casco en V hubo que colocarme un pequeño apéndice, esto no hizo muy feliz a Antonio pero no había otro remedio. Ya tenía una sonda y una corredera anteriormente, pero estaban muy viejas, y con esta tendré un agujero menos en mi casco al unir ambos sensores en uno. Además este nuevo sensor se conectará junto con el instrumento de viento a mi central de navegación por lo que en lugar de tener dos relojes (como ahora) uno para la sonda, y otro para la corredera tendré uno solo para las tres cosas (viento, sonda y corredera), esto implica un reloj menos en el exterior (a Antonio no le gustan demasiado) y un menor consumo de batería.

Then a new surprise ... they were going to put me a new log and a deep sounder, but due to the shape of my hull in V had to put a small appendix, this did not make Antonio very happy but there was no other choice. I already had a sounder and a log previously, but they were very old, and with this one I will have a hole less in my hull when joining both sensors in one.

In addition this new sensor will be connected with the wind instrument to my navigation computer and the display of the cockpit so instead of having two displays (like now) one for the sounder, and one for the log, I will have one for all three things ( wind, sounder and log), this implies a display less on the outside (Antonio does not like them too much) and a lower battery consumption.

Ese fin de semana Antonio tenía que trabajar, así que no vi a mis nuevos dueños.

That weekend Antonio had to work, so I did not see my new owners.

Por fin la última semana llegó el motor parecía como nuevo, además reemplazaron mi tubo de escape, que tenía algunas picaduras. Enmasillaron bien el lastre y me pintaron la carena con patente y ya estaba listo para ir al agua. Tuve que esperar un día entero para que me subieran al travelift de nuevo, hacía demasiado viento.

Finally the last week the engine seemed like new, they also replaced my exhaust pipe, which had some bites. They caulked the ballast well and painted the careen with antifouling and I was ready to go to the water. I had to wait a whole day for them to get on the travelift again, it was too windy.

El día 9 de marzo de 2018 será una fecha que jamás olvidaré, esa fue la tarde en que sentí el agua del mar Mediterráneo por primera vez. Yo esperaba un agua fría, como la de Irlanda o la Bretaña, pero el agua me pareció cálida, sobre todo para ser el mes de marzo. Me recordó a aquel año que pasé en el océano Pacifíco.

March 9, 2018 is a date I will never forget, that was the afternoon when I felt the water of the Mediterranean Sea for the first time. I expected cold water, like that of Ireland or Brittany, but the water seemed warm to me, especially for the month of March. It reminded me of that year that I spent in the Pacific Ocean.

Pasé el resto de la tarde amarrado en el foso del travelift, mientras vigilaban mi sentina y me colocaban la botavara.

I spent the rest of the afternoon tied up in the travelift pit, while they watched my bilge and put the boom on me.





Esa misma noche me llevaron a mi atraque, y allí estaban esperándome Raquel y Antonio para darme las amarras. Me llevé una alegría enorme.

That same night they took me to my dock, and there they were waiting for me, Raquel and Antonio, to give me the rope. I took a huge joy.

Esa fue la primera noche que cenamos los tres juntos. Una noche muy especial, pero esa es una historia que os contaré otro día.

That was the first night that the three of us had dinner together. A very special night, but that is a story that I will tell you another day.
