Desde el día 18 de agosto y hasta el día 22 Raquel y Antonio se sumieron en una actividad frenética. Me cambiaron mi vieja y doblada ancla CQR por una flamante Spade y sustituyeron también los 50 metros de cadena, reemplazaron las drizas viejas por unas nuevas de dyneema, cambiaron mis viejas y agotadas baterías de servicio de plomo por un par de flamantes baterías AGM de 110 Ah cada una, me colocaron una escala de baño, sellaron las fugas de la tapa del tanque de agua dulce e hicieron una compra de comida mucho mayor de lo normal. Antonio comprobó la escora y el asiento, después de todo esto y colocó unos cuantas garrafas de agua en proa porque estaba un poco levantada.

From the 18th of August until the 22nd, Raquel and Antonio got involved in a frenetic activity.They changed my old and bent CQR anchor for a brand new Spade and also replaced the 50 meters of chain, replaced the old halyards with new ones of dyneema, changed my old and exhausted lead service batteries for a pair of brand new AGM batteries of 110Ah, each one, they put a bath ladder on me, they sealed the leaks from the top of the freshwater tank and they made a food purchase much bigger than normal. Antonio checked the list and the seat, after all this and placed a few water carafes in the bow because it was a little up.

Yo no entendía muy bien todo esto, hasta que el día 22 por la tarde Antonio se puso a consultar las cartas de navegación y los derroteros… nos íbamos a ir a Ibiza.
¡Qué alegría mi primer crucero tras tres años!

I did not understand very well all this, until on the 22nd, in the afternoon Antonio started to consult the navigation charts and the pilots... we were going to Ibiza.
What a joy, my first cruise after three years!

Salimos el 23 por la noche, tratando de aprovechar el terral, pero sé me rompió un manguito de refrigeración y perdí todo el glicol. Por suerte Antonio, que siempre que tiene el motor encendido chequea la temperatura, se dio cuenta a tiempo y paró la máquina. Había perdido todo el líquido refrigerante y como no había suficiente a bordo para rellenarlo Antonio reparó el manguitos y usó agua. Aún así el motor no se enfriaba por lo que tras 10 millas de viaje tuvimos que darnos la vuelta.
Sin a penas viento tardamos varias horas en llegar a puerto de nuevo. Allí con el motor al mínimo atacamos a las 5 am.

We left on the 23rd at night, trying to take advantage of the terral, but I broke a cooling sleeve and lost all the glycol.Luckily Antonio, that whenever he has the engine on, he checks the temperature continously, he wachted it on time and stopped the machine. I had lost all the coolant and since there was not enough on board to refill it Antonio repaired the hoses and used water.Even so the engine did not get cold so after 10 miles of travel we had to turn around.
Without wind it took several hours to reach port again.There with the engine to the minimum we attack at 5 am.

El día 24 de agosto Raquel y Antonio fueron a comprar glicol. Drenaron el sistema entero y lo limpiaron con glicol dos veces para eliminar todo el agua, lo volvieron a llenar y purgaron el aire. Probaron el motor durante 50 minutos a 1500 rpm y o parecía calentarse.

On August 24 Raquel and Antonio went to buy glycol.They drained the entire system and cleaned it with glycol twice to remove all the water, they refilled it and purged the air.They tested the engine for 50 minutes at 1500 rpm and it seemed that it don't to heat up.

Volvimos a salir el 25 de madrugada. Y todo iba bien, pero tras un par de horas, el motor volvió a calentarse. Tuvimos que regresar de nuevo. Raquel y Antonio estaban muy decepcionados y yo me sentía fatal. Cuando llegamos a puerto, a eso de las 12 de la mañana, Antonio comprobó el impeler de la bomba y el termostato, estaban bien, así que se puso a desmontar el intercambiador de calor. Tenía tres conductos, de catorce, atascados con mucha paciencia y un alambre lo fue desatascando. Luego dejo el radiador sumergido en agua dulce toda la noche y volvió a repasar todos los conductos a primera hora de la mañana siguiente. Probaron de nuevo el motor pero seguía calentándose.

We went out again on the 25th of dawn.And everything was fine, but after a couple of hours, the engine warmed up again.We had to go back again.Raquel and Antonio were very disappointed and I felt terrible.When we arrived at the port, around 12 o'clock in the morning, Antonio checked the impeller of the pump and the thermostat, they were fine, so he started disassembling the heat exchanger.He had three conduits, of fourteen, stuck.With a lot of patience and a wire he uncloged it.Then he leave the radiator submerged in fresh water all night and went back to review all the conduits early the next morning.They tried the engine again but it still heated up.





Tras una reunión de emergencia, a propuesta de Raquel, se cambió el plan de viaje a uno más cercano que no requiriese uso de motor, las Islas Columbretes.

After an emergency meeting, at Raquel's proposal, the travel plan was changed to a closer one that did not require motor use, the Columbretes Islands.

27 DE AGOSTO: SALIDA A COLUMBRETES
AUGUST 27th: GOING TO COLUMBRETES

Salimos a las 10 am, no había mucho viento, pero Antonio siempre dice que el viento hay que esperarlo en la mar y preparado para izar la vela adecuada. A una milla y media del puerto el viento cayó por completo. Antonio, que es muy buen marino, decidió atraerlo de nuevo. Para ello optó por ponerse a cocinar, no hay nada que atraiga más el viento que ponerte a cocinar con calma chicha. 

We left at 10 am, there was not much wind, but Antonio always says that we must wait the wind at sea and ready to hoist the right sail. A mile and a half from the port, the wind was completely silent. Antonio, who is a very good sailor, decided to attract him again. For this he opted to start cooking, there is nothing more to attract the wind than to cook on a calm.

Y así fue, a eso de las 12 pm se estableció un viento sureste que nos acompañaría todo el camino. Antonio optó por un génova ligero, un 130, pero las costuras de la vela estaban viejas y empezó a abrirse. Hubo que cambiarla, para el cambio usó otro 130, pero más pesado. Desgraciadamente, en el cambio de vela, la roldana de la driza, que es muy vieja (50 años) se enganchó mordiendo mi driza nueva, por lo que tuvo que improvisar otra driza. 

And that's how it was, around 12 pm, a southeast wind was established that would accompany us all the way. Antonio opted for a lightweight genoa, a 130, but the seams of the sail were old and began to open. It had to be changed, for the change he used another 130, but heavier. Unfortunately, in the change of sail, the halyard sheave, which is very old (50 years old) was caught biting my new halyard, so he had to improvise another halyard.

Alcanzamos una velocidad punta de 6,5 nudos. La media no fue muy brillante, debido a las dos horas de encalmada de la mañana, y al retraso en el cambio de vela, casi una hora.
Llegamos a las Islas Columbretes a las 19h más o menos. Y nos amarramos a la boya número 5.
Mi primera noche fuera de puerto después de tres años… ¡Qué bien!

We reached a top speed of 6.5 knots. The average was not very bright, due to the two hours of encalmada in the morning, and the delay in the change of candle, almost an hour.
We arrived at the Columbretes Islands at 7pm or so. And we tied ourselves to buoy number 5.
My first night out of port after three years ... Great!

28 DE AGOSTO: ISLAS COLUMBRETES, DÍA DE DESCANSO. 
AUGUST 28th: ISLANDS COLUMBRETES, DAY OFF.

Las Islas Columbretes son un parque natural de extraordinaria belleza, son de origen volcánico. El fondeo y la pesca están prohibidos, pero en al isla más grande hay unas boyas donde uno puede amarrarse. Esta isla, con forma de luna cuarto menguante es el cráter de un volcán extinguido.

The Columbretes Islands are a natural park of extraordinary beauty, they are of volcanic origin. Anchoring and fishing are prohibited, but on the larger island there are buoys where you can tie yourself up. This island, in the shape of a quarter moon, is the crater of an extinct volcano.

El paisaje, de roca volcánica negra y ocre, espectacular, está cubierto por una vegetación escasa, sin embargo la flora y la fauna Marina son muy abundantes. Como la pesca está prohibida los peces no son asustadizos y nadan junto a los bañistas.

The landscape, of black and ocher volcanic rock, spectacular, is covered by a sparse vegetation, however the marine flora and fauna are very abundant. As fishing is prohibited, the fish don't feel scary and swim with the bathers.

Ese día, tras limpiar un poco mi casco bajo la línea de flotación,  Raquel y Antonio se dedicaron al “dolce far niente”. Raquel se bañó y tomó muchas fotos y Antonio devoró un libro entero. Por la tarde Antonio sacó el ukelele y se puso a tocar. Eché de menos que Raquel no trajese el piano está vez.

That day, after cleaning my hull a bit under the waterline, Raquel and Antonio spent the time in "dolce far niente" (doing nothing). Raquel bathed and took many photos and Antonio devoured an entire book. In the afternoon Antonio took out the ukulele and started playing. I missed that Rachel did not bring the piano this time.

29 DE AGOSTO: NAVEGANDO ENTRE TORMENTAS.

A la mañana siguiente se levantaron temprano. Antonio comprobó como cada mañana los niveles de batería, y tras un desayuno decidió subir al palo para arreglar la driza. Raquel se colocó en el winch, Antonio se ciñó la guindola y Raquel, ayudado por él, lo subió al tope del palo. Tras una hora de trabajo se dio por vencido porque para liberar la driza era necesario desmontar la roldana y su eje, y con el movimiento, a pesar de ser poco, no era el mejor momento para hacerlo.

The next morning they got up early.Antonio checked the battery levels, like every morning, and after a breakfast decided to climb the stick to fix the halyard.Raquel was placed in the winch, Antonio tied the harness himself and Raquel, helped by him, climbed the top of the stick.After an hour of work he gave up because to free the halyard it was necessary to disassemble the pulley and its axis, and with the movement, despite being little, it was not the best time to do it.

A las 13:00 zarpazos de vuelta a casa. Con una brisa muy suave del sur este, nos entraba por la aleta de estribor. Tras la comida, Antonio preparó una deliciosa ensalada de cangrejo y lentejas, roló hacia el este, se colocó de popa. Entonces aparejaron el génova con el tangón, en orejas de burro. Y así  con poco viento continuó el resto de la tarde. 

At 1:00 p.m.back at home.With a very gentle breeze from the south east, we entered by the starboard fin.After lunch, Antonio prepared a delicious salad of crab and lentils, rolled to the east, placed aft.Then they rigged the genoa with the spinnaker boom and set the sails wing and wing.And so with little wind continued the rest of the afternoon.

A eso de las 21 horas el viento encalmó y poco después había brisas de direcciones muy diferentes. Antonio que conoce muy bien esta zona del Mediterráneo y que llevaba observando la evolución de algunas nubes muy lejanas mandó arriar el génova, puso la mayor cazada a tope en medio, ató la caña, puso el barco al pairo y mandó a dormir a la tripulación (Raquel) mientras él se quedaba tumbado vigilando.

At about 21 hours the wind calmed and shortly after there were breezes of very different directions.Antonio, who knows this area of the Mediterranean very well and who had been observing the evolution of some very distant clouds, ordered the genoa to be lowered, put the main sail in the middle, tied the rudder, put the boat in pairand sent the crew (Raquel) to sleep, while he was lying watching.

Dos horas más tarde saltó algo de viento del norte, entonces ya podían verse tres tormentas formadas. Antonio llamó a la tripulación a cubierta (Raquel), y tras una deliberación muy meditada, decidieron correr hacia puerto. Pese a tener un foque, decidieron seguir con el génova 130 pesado para obtener la máxima velocidad posible y la mayor desplegada del todo. Entonces Antonio se fue a dormir, encargándose a Raquel de el gobierno de la embarcacion y zampándose media bolsa de pipas como cena.

Two hours later, some north wind came up, then three storms could already be seen.Antonio called the crew (Raquel) to the deck, and after a very thoughtful deliberation, they decided to run to port.Despite having a jib, they decided to continue with the heavy genoa 130 to obtain the maximum possible speed and the greatest deployment of the whole.Then Antonio went to sleep, taking charge of Raquel from the government of the boat and taking half a bag of sunflower seed for dinner.

Quince minutos después el viento había subido y rolando de manera que venía del noreste y olía diferente. Este viento que venía de tierra era el que alimentaba la mayor de las tres tormentas, que por la aleta de babor se veía que seguía creciendo. En ese momento Raquel llamó a Antonio, que dormía plácidamente. Tomaron dos rizos en la vela mayor. Yo me puse a correr todo lo que podía llegando hasta los 5,5 nudos para escapar de las tormentas. Fueron unas horas de bastante tensión.

Fifteen minutes later the wind had risen and roll so that it came from the northeast and smelled different.This wind that came from the earth was the one that fed the largest of the three storms, which could be seen from the larboard fin that was still growing.At that moment Raquel called Antonio, who was sleeping peacefully.They took two reef in the mainsail.I started running as much as I could, reaching 5.5 knots to escape the storms.It was a few hours of quite a bit of tension.

A 8 millas de la costa el viento empezó a flojear y las tormentas seguían avanzando hacia nosotros, dos de ellas se habían fusionado. Así  pasamos dos horas más, cada vez con menos viento. En las últimas 2 millas roló bruscamente hacia el oeste y bajo de intensidad, obligando a cambiar el rumbo que entonces era directo a puerto, fueron unos 15 minutos sólo pero lo suficiente para tener que dar dos bordos para conseguir entrar en puerto.

8 miles to the coast the wind began to weaken and the storms continued to move towards us, two of them had merged.So we spent two more hours, each time with less wind.In the last 2 miles it rolled sharply towards the west and low intensity, forcing to change the course that it was direct to port, they were about 15 minutes only but enough to have to give two legs to get into port.

Finalmente a las 5 de la mañana entramos en puerto, y descansé en mi amarre.
Mis dueños se fueron a dormir pues acabaron exhaustos, yo en cambio estaba eufórico por la aventura de las tormentas y por haber pasado tres días fuera de casa.
Finally at 5 o'clock in the morning we entered the port, and I rested in my mooring.
My owners went to sleep because they ended up exhausted, I was euphoric for the adventure of the storms and for having spent three days away from home.

EPÍLOGO EPILOGUE

Al final el problema de mi refrigeración se encontraba en la caja reductora que tenia obstruida su refrigeración y que es previa a la del motor. Hoy me han desmontado la entrada y salida de agua, y el tornillo de purgado y la han limpiado. Ya no se me calienta el motor.
Espero con impaciencia el próximo crucero, espero ir a las Islas Baleares, como pensaban hacer en un principio.

At the end the problem of my engine's cooling system was in the gearbox that had its cooling system blocked, and it is before than the engine. Today a mechanic has disassembled the water inlet and outlet, and the purge screw of gear box's cooler system and cleaned it. The engine is not heated anymore.
I am waiting impatiently for the next cruise, I hope to go to the Balearic Islands, as they thought we would do in the beginning.

Esta receta, igual que la de la dorada en papillote, se puede hacer tanto al horno como en la barbacoa. La temperatura del horno ha de ser alta, Igual que la de la barbacoa.


This recipe, just like the golden fish in papillote, can be made both in the oven and in the barbecue. The temperature of the oven must be high, the same as that of the barbecue.

Es muy rápida de preparar. Y no se mancha ningún cacharro.
Tiempo de preparación 5 minutos.
Tiempo de cocción total 15-30 minutos. 15 minutos en total si os gusta la carne cruda y 30 si os gusta muy hecha.

Ingredientes para tres personas:
Un solomillo de cerdo ibérico, sal gorda, romero, tomillo, pimienta y aceite de oliva.

Ingredients for three people:
An Iberian pork tenderloin, coarse salt, rosemary, thyme, pepper and olive oil.

Extender un pliego de papel de aluminio y sobre el colocar la carne. Se unta con aceite, espolvoreamos sal gorda, pimiento, romero y tomillo.

Extend a sheet of aluminum foil and place the meat on it. Spread with oil, sprinkle with coarse salt, pepper, rosemary and thyme.

Cerrar el paquete y lo colocamos en la barbacoa. Dejar que se cocine por un lado la mitad del tiempo de cocción elegido y luego se le da la vuelta y se cocina por el otro lado. Por ejemplo si el tiempo de cocción elegido es de 20 minutos serán 10 minutos por cada lado.

Se puede acompañar de patatas asadas que se hacen a la vez que la carne envueltas también papel de aluminio.

En este caso lo acompañaron de champiñoes asados al mismo tiempo que la carne. Colocar en el horno o en la barbacoa, con la cuenca del tallo para arriba, después de darle la vuelta a la carne, es decir durante la segunda mitad del tiempo de cocción.

Antonio casi siempre hace está receta con cerdo ibérico porque es como más le gusta y porque es muy sana. Pero también se puede hacer con ternera, o cerdo blanco.

También se puede envolver la carne en tocino, balcón o panceta. Pero, naturalmente, esto es menos saludable.

Cuando me compraron Antonio detectó algunas manchas y burbujas en las paredes de mi cabina, tras la primera lluvia intensa se filtró agua por esas burbujas.

When they bought me, Antonio noticed some spots and bubbles on the walls of my cabin, after the first intense rain, water has filtered by those bubbles.

 Después de una minuciosa inspección Antonio descubrió varias cosas. La primera es que la silicona entre la tajamar de madera y la cabina se había agrietado y entraba agua entre ambos acumulándose y filtrándose luego a través de mi fibra. La segunda es que debido a una reparación defectuosa anterior también se filtraba agua.

The prolem was that water entered between fiber and wood and remain inside and little by little where filtrated trhought fiberglass After a thorough inspection Antonio discovered several things. The first is that the silicone between the cutwater and the cabin had cracked and water came in between them, accumulating and filtering through my fiber. The second is that due to a previous faulty repair, water was also filtered.

La reparación anterior era defectuosa porque se había utilizado masilla sola, la masilla sólo se debe usar para reparaciones de 2mm o menos, y estos huecos eran mucho mas grandes. Cuando se usa sólo masilla en huecos tan grandes esta acaba agrietándose y despegándose.

The previous repair was defective because single putty had been used, the putty should only be used for repairs of 2mm or less, and these holes were much larger. When only putty is used in such large gaps it ends up cracking and peeling off.

Para los huecos de más de 2mm de ancho o profundo se debe usar una mezcla de masilla epoxi y fibra.

For gaps over 2mm wide or deep, a mixture of epoxy putty and fiberglass should be used.

Lo primero que hizo Antonio fue retirar toda la silicona vieja con la ayuda de espátulas de distintos tamaños, y unas fresadora muy fina. Luego limpio bien la zona con acetona. Hizo lo mismo con la masilla, retirando tanto la agrietada como la que estaba en buen estado, pues antes o después se acabaría agrietando. Además una muela de piedra fina lijó el gelcoat y dejó vista la fibra para mejorar la unión de la nueva fibra. Tras esto limpio bien todo con un trapo impregnado en acetona.

The first thing Antonio did was remove all the old silicone with the help of spatulas of different sizes, and a very fine milling machine. Then he cleaned the area well with acetone. He did the same with the putty, removing both the cracked and the one that was in good condition, because sooner or later it would end up cracking. In addition, a fine stone sanded the gelcoat and left the fiber in view to improve the bonding of the new fiberglass. After this, he cleaned again everything with a cloth impregnated with acetone.

Después le tocó el turno a Raquel. Con mucha paciencia colocó silicona entre la cabina y la madera del tajamar, la introdujo muy dentro consiguiendo así rellenar ese espacio y sellarlo. Luego en el hueco sobrante puso la mezcla de masilla, epoxi y fibra. Tras secar esta pasta, me aplicaron una lija, y después para igualar, Raquel usando una espátula fina y blanda, aplicó una masilla, esta vez fina.

Then it was Raquel's turn. With a lot of patience she placed silicone between the cabin and the wood of the cutwater, she introduced it deep inside, thus filling that space and sealing it. Then in the gap left put the mixture of putty, epoxy and fiber. After drying this paste, she applied a sandpaper, and then to equalize, Raquel using a thin and soft spatula, applied a putty, this time fine.

Cuando la segunda capa de masilla secó. Raquel limpió con acetona y pintó con un spray de gelcoat dando una capa fina. Esto permitió ver claramente las imperfecciones, así que una vez secó Antonio le dio al gelcoat con acetona para poder lijarlo bien luego. Tras el lijado Raquel me volvió a aplicar masilla fina para eliminar las imperfecciones y tras esta el último lijado y un par de manos de gelcoat y… ¡reparación terminada!


When the second layer of putty dried, Raquel cleaned with acetone and painted with a gelcoat spray giving a thin layer. This allowed to see clearly the imperfections, so once dried Antonio gave the gelcoat with acetone to be able to sand it well later. After the bundle Raquel applied fine putty again to eliminate the imperfections and after this the last sanding and a couple of gelcoat layers and ... finished repair!
